University Police Services

Frostburg University Police are sworn, certified police officers as required by Maryland state law. All officers have attended and completed a twenty-four week Maryland Police Training Commission certified police academy and complete mandated in-service training annually. The enforcement authority of campus police is derived from the Annotated Code of Maryland, Education Article 13-601. University Police have enforcement authority. The Maryland State Police, Frostburg City Police, Allegany County Sheriff, Allegany County Bureau of Police may be called for assistance if requested by the university.

The University Police are responsible for the safety and security of all who learn, live, work, and visit the campus. The University Police Department has full law enforcement authority on campus. Officers are on duty 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. University Police services include but are not limited to investigation of crimes and incidents on campus, response to emergencies, vehicle registration and parking enforcement, lost and found, and physical security of the buildings.

Campus Security

Residence halls remain locked 24 hours a day. Residence hall facilities are for use by residents and their bona fide guests only. Residents have keys to their rooms and are encouraged to keep their doors locked at all times, even if they are only going to be away for a "few minutes." To gain access to the building the resident must accompany guests.

Academic and administrative buildings are normally open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday and at other times when events are scheduled. The Lewis J Ort Library is open seven days a week with hours posted on the University web site. Those needing access to buildings at times when buildings are closed may do so when proper authorization has been received by the University Police from responsible faculty/staff member or administrator.

The Universities Office of Media Relations will serve as the conduit for information on and off campus during a designated campus emergency. In the event of an emergency, the campus will be notified by using the following:

  • University E-mail
  • E2Campus
  • Postings on the University Web site
  • Campus signs in and on buildings
  • Campus media outlets including WFWM & TV 3
  • All local commercial media

Although campus emergencies are rare the University remains diligent in its emergency planning and prevention tips.

Off-Campus Misconduct

The University has the authority and exercises that authority through the Office of Student & Educational Services to take disciplinary action in cases of misconduct, by students or student’s organizations, which are detrimental to University interests.
