Internet Access from the FSU Residence Halls

Frostburg State University provides free access to the Internet for its on-campus students.

From home, FSU students must use an ISP for dial-up or high speed broadband access to the World Wide Web (WWW). FSU recommends broadband access. Local Broadband services may be acquired through Verizon or the local cable company.

From on-campus offices and residence halls, users have access to a high-speed network with two DS3 lines (90mb total) to the Internet. To access the Internet through a residence hall connection, you must have an Ethernet adapter (card) installed in your computer. Many new computer systems include a built-in network adapter. If your system does not, you can purchase an adapter from the FSU Bookstore or from a reputable computer supply store.

Internet Materials Found at the FSU Bookstore

Everything you will need to connect to the network, including software, hardware and cabling, is available on campus at the FSU Bookstore. These items include:

  • Software Resource CD-ROM
(contains McAfee AntiVirus, Spybot and other useful utilities)
  • PC Ethernet Adapters
  • Wireless Adapters
  • Ethernet Cables (Ethernet cables connect your computer to the wall plate) in various lengths

Connecting To The Internet

After your computer has an Ethernet card installed, you can follow the appropriate instructions on the Network Registration web site.

Electronic Ethics

There are many rules and laws governing usage of the Internet. Don’t jeopardize your future by violating these guidelines. It is essential that you read the policy on Responsible Computing at Frostburg State University so that you will know how to conduct yourself on the Internet.
